Remember last week, Beth brought in tadpoles. A week has passed and they certainly have grown. We have been feeding them lettuce and spinach.










We could really use some snacks again if any are so inclined to bring some in. Apples, clementines, pretzels, crackers, cheerios, nut free bars, goldfish, fruit snacks, etc, etc. Thanks for your help.

Hand bones

Today Deirdre came in to talk to us about poisons everywhere, in the school, in our houses, etc. A couple kids came up with some poisonous things in the house.

Deirdre showed us a  poster about medicines that look like candy. Its important to remember that medicine is not candy and needs to be taken when a parent is there to tell you its ok.

We played a little game called, Quills up Quills down....

Deirdre showed us many items and as a group we decided if it was ok or not ok. Quill the Porcupine helped us out.

Deidre showed us two glasses of what looked like water. She did an experiment to show us with food coloring and baking soda. What do you do if you see a glass of water that maybe has been sitting around? Is it water or poison?  The experiment showed that sometimes we don't know what it is that we are going to drink or eat. It is important to ask an adult before ingesting it!

In Science today we continued learning about bones. Today we discussed what the function of a bone is. How bones protect the body. And what bones do to help you move. We then followed up with assembling our own hand bones.

Special guests..........

It was a busy day in Kindergarten today. We had two special guests! 

Our first guest was Yuko, our amazing lunch lady. She was our Royal Reader and read us a couple of her favorite books. One was even in Japanese! Very cool. Thank you Yuko!

Our second guest was Brendan Gaylord, who showed off his firefighting gear. Brendan is a volunteer firefighter for the Warren Fire Department and Beth's son! He was here today to bring awareness to the kids about what a firefighter looks like and sounds like with all the gear on. Brendan had many questions to answer such as:

Q: How much water fits into the tanks on the Fire Truck?

A: 10,000 gallons.

Max talked about pigeons that his grandparents have and the pigeons had babies a couple days ago.


In Language Arts we have been learning about digraphs; ch, sh, th, wh and ck. We have been saying the letter combo, the picture clue and the sounds that they make. We have also practiced finding words with the digraphs in them. We are also working hard to learn our play lines. Very fun when you start to get your lines and can add emphasis and emotions.

In Math we have been practicing recognizing dots on a grid.  We can instantly recognize up to ten dots by knowing that each row holds five dots.  If the first row is full and the second row has 3 dots we know that it is 5+3 which is 8 dots.  We have also been building teen numbers on a grid.  Today we used two colors to show teen numbers.  For the number 15 we colored ten squares one color and five more another color to show that 10+5 is 15.

Willis : Shared his helicopter, a wooden tree that his great grandfather made him and a Tucan Whistle that he blew into to make it's beautiful sound. And it makes different sounds if you cover different holes.

Ryan : Shared his compass that he got from the Vermont Institute of Science.

Eva: Shared her rocks that she cracked at her Rock Cracking Station. And she had a polished rock too.

Eli : Shared his board that he broke in Taekwondo. He also showed off his outfit and his belt, he is half way to getting his yellow belt!

Beth : Shared some tad poles that she brought in from her house. We will have these little swimmers hanging with us for a while to watch the wonderful transformation they go through.

Fiona : Yesterday Fiona shared with us the spine bones from a animal that her mom found.

Bodhi: Yesterday Bodhi shared her flower that she got when she went to mothers day brunch.

What's the News?
This is an opportunity for the kids to share something, anything they want. It is a short two or three sentence verbal share. Here is what they had to say...

Grady - "I went to my sister lacrosse game yesterday."
Earl - "I went to a Tae kwon do competition."
Maddie - "I went to TJ Max and bought a toy."
McCartney - "I found a spider in my bathroom and it was hanging upside down."
Willis - "I spent the night at my grandparents house. We drove over the gap and I saw MRG."
Mazie - "I went to the Art Fair and saw Grady, Bodhi and Addie and had a fun time. I danced and went by the river. Grady was making a path."
Max - "I went to the Art Fair and I got to make these fluff balls, it's for the birds to take to their nests. I ate ice cream and listened to music."
Molly - "I went to dinner with my family for Mother's Day."
Kamden - "Yesterday at my party for my birthday I got a bike for my birthday."
Ryan- "Yesterday I went to a bird place, I can't remember what it is called. I got a really cool compass."
Eva - "Today when I was driving to school I saw a fox. It was running to the woods."
Dahlia - "I went bowling yesterday for Mother's Day."
Eli - "On Saturday  was my dad's birthday and we went to the Bridge Street Art Fair."
Ryder - "I built something a couple days ago."
Savi - "Yesterday I went Rock Climbing."
Ethan - "On the first day of vacation, my grandmother came over."
Bodhi - "Yesterday I went to the Bridges. When I got home I started having growing pains and might go to the Drs tomorrow."
Jackie - "I helped my Mom with lots of garden work and we found a birds nest."
Beth - "My kids came over for dinner for Mother's Day and somehow I made the dinner and cleaned up after the dinner."
Connie - "I got a special shrub from my son for Mother's Day and yesterday was the first time I ever made doughnuts."

West - Told us that his sister and brother were making a path in the woods and found a Robin's Egg and gave it to my dad.

Grady - Got a toy at the dump.

Dahlia - Brought in a special tag that she found at the bowling ally.

FREE CHOICE....

Max - Made a fishing plane. "The fishing plane can shoot out nets and can catch all the fish and throw it up on top of the boat and then they get knocked into the tank. And the tail on the plane that is like a crane that lets down a grabber to catch fish. It can also float on water. "

Grady - Made a boat "it has a eye to watch things." 

Math Class- In math we are building teen numbers.  We made number bonds with pennies!  When we put 10 pennies together with 4 pennies we get 14 pennies.  We are also practicing skip counting and counting backwards from 20 to 0.  This is a hard task!  When you are on a car ride please do some counting to help strengthen these skills.

Song Birds

Did you see that bright circular thing in the sky today? We sure did, and took advantage of the amazing warmth it also provided. Lots of outside time today thanks to Four Winds and free time during the day!

Was a great day to "hang" around, roll and play.

Four Winds.... Song Birds!

Our Four Winds volunteer, Ellen, came in to talk to us about Song Birds. We had a small puppet show about why birds sing. We then went outside to hear the many different birds there are singing outside.

We even practiced sounding like many birds that we learned about, as well as the times of days that the birds come out.


Great book today.....    How To Be A Friend A Guide to Making Friends and Keeping Them. We've been emphasizing friendships and how we can all be friends or friendly with each other.



Lungs and Stomach.... Today we learned about the the lungs and stomach. We observed the structure of the lungs. We talked about how the lungs help us breath, work with the heart to help pump blood all around our body. Take in "oxygen" (a fancy word for air) that helps our body function, etc. We learned that our stomach breaks up food we eat into energy our bodies can use.

 Here are a few friends who made their own lungs, each of the kids made their own to take home to share with their families.



REMINDER.... Strep is going around in our classroom. Many kids have been out sick this week. If your child isn't feeling well, be sure to have your child get lots of rest and hydration. Scratchy throats, tired little people and fevers are a couple indicators.
