What's Expected

MORNING ACTIVITIES....

SHARING......
Dahlia shared her special lego guys.

West brought in his trumpet and played a couple sounds for us.

Willis shared that on his way to school he and his mom saw a deer in the road.

Grady shared his "S" clip with the class.

Ani came in today to talk about "what's expected" of us when we are in circle. Here are a few things we came up with....
* Sit and be quiet.
* Listen to the teacher.
* Raise your hand, don't talk out of turn.
* Getting your brain ready, thinking about what the teacher is saying.
Ani then read to us more of the book, You Are A Social Detective!  This book is an overview of key concepts that help to explore our own and others' social thinking.

MATH....
In math we are working on the teen numbers.  We are working on counting 10 and then some more.  Like 10 and 4 more is 14.  We have been playing games in pairs where students get to take turns being the teacher!  They really like that part!

We are hoping to have Four Winds tomorrow, Tuesday. Please make sure your child comes in with appropriate clothing and foot wear for going outside. Mother Nature is not sure if she wants
spring or winter right now, so please be sure your child has the option of being prepared for both. We really appreciate it.

Bones and Muscles

Language Arts....
In Language Arts we started something new and exciting...Readers Theater! We started off by getting our scripts for the play we will be doing in June (more info to come later on). There are two plays and kids are split up into small groups.  Each of the kids will have a part that they will be practicing.  So much excitement. Stay tuned for more info.

Health class with Deirdre.....
All kids got a card that had a picture of a food group on it. We discussed what the food group does for our bodies.  Today was focused on trying different foods. "It is the only way you will be able to decide if you like it or not, by trying different foods." Deirdre will come around during breakfast or lunch to hand out stickers that say "I tried it!"  We also did an exercise for each food group and how it helps our body, which was a review of what we did last with Deirdre. She also read the book D.W. the Picky Eater  by Marc Brown.
Smiling lunges, for dairy! Good for teeth and bones.

SCIENCE......
Science lab today involved learning about muscles and bones. We had a story called Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney. We then split into small groups to talk about the muscles and bones. We had a chance to look at a couple of model bones to feel what it is like and see what it looks like on the inside of the bone. We also had a chance to manipulate the model arm and watch the interaction of the muscle (the rubber bands) and bone (the cardboard pieces).

Rain doesn't stop us from going outside

Morning activities....

Coloring, clay and pattern blocks.... oh so much fun!

Morning greeting....
One student was in the chair on the other side of the room while the other kids sat quietly. One student had a turn to say "good morning _______" in a strange voice. The student in the chair had to guess their classmates voice. If they were correct, the student with the funny voice got to sit in the chair for a chance to guess.

Sharing ...

Bodhi shared her special pencil case.

Earl shared about his t-shirt that he got while watching a special soccer game.

Fiona shared her piece of coral and the skeleton of a Meerkat.

In Language Arts we have been working on blending and reading three letter words. Consonant, vowel, consonant words. We are focusing on listening for the vowel sound in the words to distinguish between long and short vowel sounds.  We are tapping out the sounds in a word and then find the corresponding letters to each tap in order to spell the word.  We have also been learning some "Trick Words" which  are words that are not tapped out. These words need to be memorized. i.e: was, is, it, or, the, on, etc. Many kids have been able to take some of their trick words home that they have been able to memorize over a period of time. We highly recommend that you work with your kids on those words to keep them fresh in their minds.

After our lunch recess Beth read to the class I Wish that I Had Duck Feet by Theo LeSieg

Many kids came back from Library and books were being read everywhere in the room. Not prompted! Way to go readers, love to see this happening during their Free Choice time!!!

A friendly reminder that it is great to have the extra set of clothes for kids this time of year. It is gloomy and rainy, but believe us, we are going outside even if it is raining! So don't forget to send in those rain coats and rain boots in  with your child.  Extra socks for the wet feet, or those extra pants/shorts for the puddle that just didn't get out of our way when we came down the slide! Thanks in advance for making it easier to get through the day with dry clothes if needed.

Adding and Subtraction sentences

In math we are working on addition and subtraction sentences and the relationship between the two.  We helped a frog hop on lily pads with numbers on them.  He ate three flies, hop on three lily pads and then he ate four more flies, hop on four more lily pads.  How many flies did he eat?  (You can tell by what number lily pad he landed on!)  Then we used a number line and used cubes to move up and down the number line.  You have 8 strawberries for snack. Put your cube on the number 8.  Then you ate 4 strawberries.  Move your cube back 4 numbers.  How many strawberries do you have left.  (You can tell by what number the cube landed on after you moved it.)  We are moving up and down the number line and writing number sentences to match!  Very tricky stuff!

Sharing
Dahlia sharing deer antlers that her parents found in the woods at different times.

Grady shared his toy that he got this past weekend.

West shared his Perplexus ball. Its AMAZING!
