Picture day

Morning Meeting....
We reviewed the chart. Today the task was to answer the question, "Does the Earth move?"  EVERYONE answered on the "yes" side.  We practiced counting how many days of school we have had.  We are up to 21 days!  We also practiced reading sentences on the chart.
We sang our Days of the Week song again, (multiple times, by popular request).

PICTURE DAY! We had our pictures done by Ember Photography today. Brian was awesome with all the kids. Say cheese!!!  Everyone was looking amazing.

Math....
We worked on dot flashes again. We played a game with unifix cubes. Each partner had a 5 stack, one person would hold and snap the stack in their hands, then show their partner part of the snapped stack, and the other person had to say how many were missing to complete the 5 stack. We worked on a number 5 sheet, which was lots of practice writing 5 correctly.

Language Arts....
We had "letter leaders" review the letters we have learned so far. Each leader had to say the letter name, picture clue and the sound of each letter and the rest of the class echoed what our letter leader said.

Then we practiced making letters with special block pieces.  Sometimes we made a letter by ourselves and sometimes we worked as a team to build the letter.

Writing....
We have started working on writing with our class.  Today kids drew pictures and then they wrote the first letter that they could hear in the word.  For example if you drew a picture of a fish then you would write the letter F next to your picture!  They all did a great job with this!

Days of the Week

Morning Meeting...
We reflected on yesterdays Four Winds class. The question on the board was "Does the sun move?'
All the kids had a chance to say "yes" or "no". We learned that the Sun does NOT move, but the Earth moves around the sun. We sang a song about the days of the week, which I have put below in case anyone wants to sing with their children.

Letters with ECHO..... we reviewed all the letters so far and added in the letter Ii. Each letter has a rhyme with pictures that have the beginning letter I.

Math.....
Beth dumped all the marbles on the floor, but could not figure out how many there were. She would count but would loose track and have to start over! How do you not loose track of counting?
Jack - "pick one up and put it in the bowl and keep doing it."
We counted 66 marbles!

Then we played Monster Squeeze again. They are really getting a grasp on bigger and smaller numbers.

"What's the news?"
Beth - "I mowed the lawn yesterday."
Bayden- "I played a soccer game."
Sedsel - "I went apple picking with my dad yesterday."
Sailor- "I went somewhere special."
Ethan -"I had a play date with JJ."
Else - "I went to pick out pumpkins.
Ashlyn-"I watched TV."
Zoe -"I went to a party yesterday night."
Luca -"I went apple picking and picked out a pumpkin too."
River -"I went to a fair yesterday."
Taber -" I went swimming in the pool with my mom."
Jack -"Yesterday I went to two birthdays."
Narumi-"Yesterday I went to a party and had my face painted and got fake hair."
Skyler - "I saw Baden at the store and I got a soccer ball too."
Stella- "My mommy and my sister got a white pumpkin,"

We reviewed our chart and all the patterns that we completed this morning. We checked out the calendar, noticed the new month, October. We read the days of the week and we read "yesterday was Sunday." "Today is Monday." Tomorrow will be Tuesday."

Beth read a book called One is A Snail Ten is A Crab by April and Jeff Sayre.
This book is all about counting. "If one is a snail, and two is a person......we must be counting by feet Children will love this hilariously illustrated introduction to simple counting and multiplication. Follow the sign to the beach for some mathematical mayhem."

MATH....
We started off doing some "flash dots". Beth held up papers with dots on them, kids had to quickly say how many were on each page without getting tricked. We are really getting stronger each time we do these. Then we played a game called Monster Munch. We worked with a partner and a number line and two monsters!  The Monsters moved up or down the number line to help our partner guess what number we were thinking of, like twenty questions.  It's a tricky game but the kids picked it up quickly!

FOUR WINDS....
In Four Winds today we learned about the sun and the earth and how the movement of the earth makes day and night.  Then we went outside and traced our shadows and checked on our shadows several times throughout the day to see how our shadows changed.  We also got to play with flashlights to make shadows in our classroom.  It was lots of fun!  Thank you to Nora's mom, Rachel and Sedsel's mom, Stacy, for being our Four Winds teachers!
Puppet show performance about light and shadows.

Finding shadows.

Partnered up and tracing shadows.

Then we came back inside and learned more with shadows by using a flashlight (acting as our sun) and little people. Making the light shine in different places around the little people. We could make the shadow bigger and smaller and in different parts of the paper.

We went back out to see if our shadows changed, and in fact they did! Our shadows got smaller and moved to the side. The Earth's rotation around the sun is pretty incredible.

We went back out again about 3.5 hours later to see if there were any changes again. We found HUGE changes.  Our shadows moved a lot! It was great to see the changes. We even predicted where our shadows would be if we came back at dinner time, and bed time, and when we are sleeping. Feel free to ask your child about what they learned about shadows.
