L for Lobster

Morning Meeting....
Review the calendar. We are going from November to December tomorrow. We looked at ALL the days we have had in November. December is the last month of the year! When December is over we start a new year. We did a quick shape review, everyone gets half of a shape and goes around to find their match.

Math....
We read Shape Spotters by Megan E Bryant.  "Come along with Ms. Carey's class on a scavenger hunt for shapes at school! With rhyming clues and hidden shapes in every picture for kids to spot, this book is the perfect introduction to shapes for beginning readers."

We got many different shapes to play with. For a little bit kids played with the shapes they got and sorted them by shape, size and some by color. We then looked for specific shapes. "Find a shape that has a curve. Find a shape that has three sides." etc.  We learned a new shape called the parallelogram.

Parallelogram

Playing with shapes. Listening to clues about a shape to find the correct one in our piles.

Language Arts...
We reviewed all of the letters and then counted how many letters we have learned. We have learned 19 letters so far. Ashlyn "is there 100 letters?" Beth "That's a good questions, there are actually 26 letters." We then learned about our new letter Ll. We looked a few objects that began with the letter L. Lobster, lock, lincoln log, letter L, lego, lip balm.
Sedsel shared some foreign money. "This is some money that came from Singapore, you can see through it. These are from Malaysia."
Thayer "Where did you get them?"
Sedsel "My dad."
Narumi "Why are they colorful?"
Sedsel "Their money is different."
Lenora "Were you with your dad when he got them?"
Sedsel "No."

Narumi told us about something she has at home. "I have a notebook that is pink and it has a little panda on it."
Willow "I like your story.
Stell a" Where did you get it
Narumi "From Christmas from my Grandma.
Nora "Did it have dots?
Narumi "No it had stripes."

REMINDER.....
Mother Nature is finicky. No telling what kind of weather we will have. Please make sure your child comes to school with the ability to dress according to the weather. That includes hat, mittens/gloves (preferably ones that can resist water, snow pants, warm boots, jacket, neck warmer. We are outside at least 2 times a day. Thank you for your support.

A quick shot of some getting the chance to plant our Amarillus bulb.

Morning Greeting....
High Five greeting, just as it says, high five your neighbor and say good morning. Good skills in many ways for these kids. Looking at each other in the eyes. Kindly giving a high five.  These social skills will be carried with them everywhere they go!

Book Corner....
Math Is Everywhere. By Brian and Jillian Cutting.

Math....
Number match. Everyone got a card with a number and they had to find the match and partner.

Secret number bags. We had a partner today and there was a random number of cubes  in the bag for the partners to figure out. Then they had to go around the room to find things that made their number. They could find objects, they could make equations, etc.  Deirdre came in to guess what our numbers were by looking at our posters we made.

Sharing....
Baden "Once me and Jack went scuba diving together and we saw a squid. And we jumped off the helicopter."
Thayer "Did it squirt ink at you?
Baden "Yes."
Luca "Did it grab you?"
Baden "It almost did. But it missed us."
Lenora "were you scared?"
Baden "Yes, really scared."

Skyler brought in crystals.  "Luca gave them. They are really rocks but they have crystals in them. We have to use giant hammers to smash them."
Baden "They're cool."
Taber "Where did you get them?"
Skyler "I got these from Luca."
Ethan "Where did you get them and can they break stuff?"
Skyler "They can make dents because they are hard."

Willow "I made these necklaces at school."
Stella "I like them"
Thayer "What day did you make them on?"
Willow "Today."

Writing....
We had a writing activity today that focused on the kids writing a three letter word that they sounded out and then drew a picture to go with it. They have all been showing interest in writing words, sounding out letters to make words.

Spelling words

Morning Activities....
Play dough

Lexia

Number bingo
Morning Meeting....
Chart activity was to write your name and then count and write the number of letters in your name. Then we did a number comparison.
We did a morning chant... "Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?"

Pete the Cat Scuba Cat  by James Dean. "Pete the Cat’s world to life under the sea in this new I Can Read book.Pete the Cat is going scuba diving!"

Math....
Matching shapes with partners. We had a special guest today, Elizabeth Tarno (5/6 grade teacher). She came in to observe our math. We did our usual finger flash game, but today's twist was to make one less finger flash to the number they saw on the card.
We did our white board game where we take our dice, roll and then write one less than the total of their two dice. So if you rolled a 6 you would take one away, that would be 5, you write that number on your white board. You do that 4 times then go up and show Beth and if your numbers are written correctly you get a sticker.

Language Arts.....
We are writing words!!!! How did this happen so quickly?? Today we got white boards and had three straight lines across the middle. Beth would show us a letter card and we would write that letter on our line. After three cards, we had a word!! PET, SIT, TOP, etc. They loved being able to sound out the letters and then read the words!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

HAVE A WONDERFUL
THANKSGIVING BREAK!

Morning Meeting...
We continue to practice counting our numbers and doing it in many ways. Today we had fun counting to 10. We stood in a circle and each of us had to say the next number (1-10). If you were 10, you had to sit down and we continued until only one person was standing.   We also practiced the handshake greeting. (Good practice for this holiday season, perhaps you will see your child shake hands with someone new.)

Math...
We played a great game with dice called Roll and Match.  Kids had to change their amount of cubes to match their partners.

Book Corner......
Willow brought in a book to share with the class that she bought at the Book Fair. Pete the Cat Snow Daze by James Dean.   "A fun, surprising, snowy adventure with Pete the Cat! In Pete the Cat: Snow Daze, school is canceled, and Pete cannot wait to play in the snow with all his friends."

Language Arts....
Letter matching! They love to do this a few times. We also heard a cute story from Echo and baby Echo. It was a story about Echo teaching baby Echo how to fly. Baby Echo didn't want to fly, because he was scared. But Echo taught baby Echo to be brave. Baby Echo learned to fly!
We talked about who the characters were, where the story took place, what was the problem with baby Echo and how they solved the problem, what happened in the end and how baby Echo felt in the beginning and end.
We reviewed our letter Jj, and learned how to write it the correct way.

Social Studies Project time....
We've been talking about the Pilgrims and Native Americans this week and when the First Thanksgiving dinner was. Today we made Native American headdresses.  We all want to be Squanto because he was so kind and helpful!
