HAPPY HALLOWEEN

We started with the whole school costume parade today. Here is the site to watch the video that was made of us all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH2FhGChOds&sns=em Many of you were able to stay
and see the amazing costumes these kids had on. Spooktacular fun had by all!

We had regular classes today as usual. Language Arts we learned THREE new letters; Ll, Hh, Kk. We also did some retelling of stories from our book box.

Math we had a fun cut and paste halloween page. Kids had to match the numerals to the appropriate pictures. For example if there were nine witches hats they had to mach the number 9 to the hats. We also played a dice game called "one more". This is where you roll the dice and you have to think what that number is that was rolled and add one more to it.

Today was P.E. and Computer Lab!

Thank you to parents who brought in many treats for us to share for our Halloween Party. We had lots of fun and tasty treats!

Snow is in the air

Snow is in the air! It was a snowy, wet day outside on Friday. Many were prepared to be out in the cold, wet snow. Check out Fiona in the picture below, that girl was prepared!!! Please remember that we go out 2-3 times a day, so extra mittens, socks or even pants sometimes are helpful to keep your kiddo comfortable throughout the day.

 Fun in the snow!!

We had another fantastic Four Winds, with Eli and Eva's mom. Today we learned about seeds. We learned how they travel and grow.  As well as what  different seeds look like AND taste like. It was great to see all the kids explore with the seeds.

Tasty!
Thank you Ellen and Katherine for teaching us about seeds.

Math is a blast!

Math is a blast!  We made number staircases with unifix cubes.  We continue to do finger flashes, being able to recognize that 5 fingers and 2 fingers is 7 without having to count. Or 5 dots and 2 dots is 7 without having to count.

We are wrapping up our retelling unit, beginning, middle and end of a story. We have seen very proud kids as they have really enjoyed making words. Sounding out words and READING words. As you read with your child give them a chance to read to you, retell the story with beginning, middle and end. Or retell using words first, next, then and last.

Halloween is on Monday! Im sure the goblins, ghouls and witches will be haunting this class. Please remind your child that we will have the school parade in the morning, but will be taking off our costumes and leaving them in their cubbies or parents are welcome to stay to watch the parade and take costumes home if they would like. Parade starts at 8a.m. As a class we will be getting into some shenanigans with our own halloween fun! We will be having a little party to celebrate this wicked holiday. There will be treats(we should have plenty,  provided by a few parent volunteers, no need to bring any in) games and crafts.

BURRRRR......ITS COLD OUTSIDE!!!!!

Morning greeting started with "good morning_______" and high five the person sitting next to you.  These exercises are great for getting kids to look at each other and speak to each other in a polite way.

We read The Hat by, Jan Brett. Then talked about what happened first, next and last in the story. We played with magnetic boards finding letters that were called out. Made words with the magnets as well as used wiki sticks to make our letters and words. We also had kids stand in a row, and with our fingers wrote a letter on their back. Then each child had a chance to write their letter on the big white board. It is such mystery to these kids what we may write on their backs. Great activity to do any time with your child. And kids can do it to the adults too!

We had "Silent Reading" time today. Each of the kids got their own books and read in a quiet space in the room. They had the chance to read different books.  Many were reading the leveled reader books. These books are great for picture walking as well as giving them an opportunity to read the words or sound out some of the words.

BURRRRR......ITS COLD OUTSIDE!!!!!
Please send your child to school with appropriate clothing. We have modeled what is good for this weather, like boots, hat, mittens/gloves, scarfs, jacket that zips up, and some kids are coming in with snow pants just for warmth. Please help your kids come in prepared for the weather.

Join Ethan and his mom, Celeste, for the kids Trick or Trot fun run, on Saturday at 4pm. Check out the bulletin for more info.

Buddies

Today we had our first introduction to our Buddies!!! Heidi Hill's 3rd and 4th grade class will be joining us a couple times a month. We will read with our buddies as well as do projects through out the year. It is a time for the older kids to teach the younger kids and gives the younger kids an opportunity to learn from someone besides an adult, as well as get to know some big kids in the school.

In Math we continue to work with the number 10. We played a game today called Mix and Fix and we went shopping with 10 pennies. Yesterday we walked on a path through a village that had the numbers 1-10 on it. We learned how to do wet dog counting as well. Ask your kids how they do "wet dog" counting.

This week in Language Arts we are learning two new letters, Pp and Jj.  These two letters plus what we have learned so far make 17 letters, that we have learned from the alphabet! They have learned the letter names, they use the picture clue to help them remember and they can say the sound to each of the letters we have learned.  Below is a couple pictures of kids sounding out words and writing them on their own. We continue to work with wiki sticks (class favorite), sand, white boards, as well as many other hands on activities. Partner reading continues to be a fun favorite! There is a collection of books they can choose from with their partner. They are also getting really great at being able to tell what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the books.

Max, Eva and Maddie sounding out and writing words.

Today we read Wet Dog by, Elise Broach  which was brought in by Max. Thank you Max for sharing your book. It is a great tie in to our wet dog counting!
