Making Casts

NO POWER! That is how we started our day yesterday. It is ohhh soooo exciting to have some darkness. While it was a very windy evening causing this power outage, the sun came through this morning to provide our classroom with great light for working in. But, thanks to our maintenance crew, we were back on with generators in no time!

Math.....
We had some fun with math today. Played a new game, "Finger Flash Addition". With a partner we would put hands behind back then say "one, two, three, flash!" Flash our hands at each other with some of our fingers. Taking both hands, we count how many fingers altogether. It got tricky when they started adding in their other hand.

Language Arts....
Fit the lines.

Free Choice.....
Teacher Narumi with her students Sedsel and Nora.
They are doing some math counting.
(This class could so run on, without Beth and Connie!) :-)

Water table fun.

Connie "Ethan, what do you guys have here?"
Ethan "A space ship. Have you heard of one?"
Connie (Laughing) "Yes Ethan I have. Where will you go with your space ship."
Ethan "Space. Ya know? Ha."
(I think I'm bothering him. He doesn't have time for questions it seems.)
Ethan "Ok guys, here we go. Control, we are ready."

Welcome to the Barber Shop!
Skyler trimming up Baden's hair.

Book Corner....
Berenstein Bears and the Trouble with Friends  The new cub in the neighborhood, Lizzy Bruin, is the same age as Sister Bear--and she's also just as bossy. After a fight threatens their budding friendship, both cubs learn that you can't always have your own way if you want to have friends.

Friends Forever Snoopy This book is a series of short chapters. Friends stick together. Friends are there when you need them. Join Snoopy and the Peanuts gang for some laughs and lessons about friendship.

Science...
We finished up our unit on the human body with broken bones and making a cast. I'll let the pictures tell the story.

Doctors choose and prep with their supplies and begin work on patients.

Completed casts by our very talented Doctors. Then we switch to be the patent.

Happy Birthday Twins!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TWINS!!!!
Thanks for the treats. We hope you had a wonderful 6th birthday Sailor and River.
Stay Sparkly!

Morning Meeting.....
Counting by 10's, 1's and groovin' while we do it. Reading the chart and recognizing what comes at the end of a sentence, the beginning etc. There was a mistake with our chart today. Connie made the chart and made a mistake. She wrote March for the month on our chart, but Thayer recognized that it wasn't March anymore it's April! Good catch Thayer! We had a tricky chart activity today. Kids had to find the month they were born in and put their name with that month.

Our morning greeting was "I have never_______, but I would like to ________."
Beth I have never skydived but would like to try it.
River "I have never been on a plane, but would like to go on one."
Nora "I have never had a cat, but I would like to have one."
Jack "I have never had goats, but I would like to."
Else "I have never been horseback riding, but I would like to try."

Four Winds

Morning Activities.....
Alphabet letters are a big hit these days. The biggest thing is creating each others names and linking them together.

The drawing crew! Honestly there are going to be some Artists, Architects, or perhaps Engineers in this group.

Four Winds.....
Thank you to Stacey (Sedsel's mom) and Rachel (Narumi's step-mom) for coming in to talk to us about the cycle of water. They put on a great puppet show and then did many experiments with us. Check us out!

Experiment 1....
Making water move! How do you do that? Well, Stacey showed us with a piece of paper (with a maze on it), a piece of wax paper, a toothpick and a couple tiny water droplets on top of the wax paper. Then using the toothpick, touch a water droplet and see if you can get the water droplet to attach to the toothpick and be dragged around.

 Experiment 2....
Rachel demonstrating water droplets on a penny. How many drops of water can fit on a penny before over flowing on the table?

Experiment 3....
Using a paper clip and a fork, we try to see if we can make the paperclip float in a cup of water. When done slowly, many of us were able to find success. Some of us also found that in order to make it happen we needed to dry off our fork and paper clip otherwise there was a disadvantage.

Success! The paper clip floats!

Experiment 4...
Cold and Hot water mixing together, what happens?
Taking two tubes(adding dye for demonstration purposes); one with cold water and one with hot, now dipping the cold water tube in the hot water and nothing happens, the cold water sits at the bottom,
because cold water mixed with hot water is heavy and sinks.

Dipping the hot water tube in cold water demonstrates what happens when they are mixed, and the result is that the hot water rises to the top.

Drumming

SNACKS...
Not everyone is able to bring in snacks, or they don't bring in enough, they are growing kids who need fuel for their hard working brains and bodies. If you have snacks you can share with the class we would appreciate it. Ideas: goldfish, granola bars, pretzels, cheerios, crackers, etc.
Thank you.

Drumming....
We had an assembly with our Artist in Residence, Stewart, who will be teaching us all about Taiko drumming. This is sponsored by the PTO. Thank you PTO for doing this. We are very excited to learn and play with the Taiko drums. Every day we will be working with him and on Thursday April 12th, there will be an all school performance at 6 p.m. for you to all come and see.

Let the drumming begin!

Language Arts....
Spelling words. Today we used letter cards and listened for the letter sounds.  We came up and put our sounds together to make words.  Beth tried to trick us with some 4 and 5 letter words but we all figured it out!

Who remembers this?!

Connie "What are all the chairs for?"
Zoe "We are having a meeting."
Connie "Great, can I join."
Zoe "Yes."
Connie "What is the meeting about?"
Zoe (Shrugs her shoulders, doesn't say anything.) Then... "Nothing."
Connie "Oh, I thought you were having a meeting. Maybe this is the meeting of the minds?"
Zoe "NO, not a meeting for the minds."
Connie "Oh, Ok! Well, are you solving the problems of the world?"
Zoe (Frowns at me.) "There are no problems in the world."
Connie "I love you Zoe! You have a great mind."
Oh to be 5 years old again! There really aren't any problems that need a meeting to solve them.
