Rekenreks

Morning Meeting....
We started the morning with reading our chart, and recognizing words we know. They are all starting to remember and READ words they know. We did the, "Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?" chant/greeting this morning (which continued in the lunchroom today, very cute). Then we looked at our book shelf that has new books on it for Halloween. We then read, The Teeny Tiny Ghost by Kay Winters.  "One black October night, the teeny tiny ghost is floating in his teeny tiny home when he hears a rap tap tap on the door. And he knows it's up to him to keep himself and his teeny tiny cats safe."
Math....
Rekenreks; rekenrek means calculating frame, or arithmetic rack. For us older folk, you might remember them as abacus. It is designed to support natural mathematical development and to generate a variety of addition and subtraction strategies.

Learning about the Rekenrek with partners. Working together to solve math problems.

Language Arts......
Word families. Cat, sat, bat, hat, mat.
Ethan - "They have the same letters because they rhyme."
Beth "What do you notice? .... bake, make, take, cake."
Nora - "They have the same three letters."
Beth - "Mow, tow, snow, crow. What do you notice?"
Willow- "They all rhyme with o's and w's."
Beth "Why do they all have the same ending?"
Narumi -"because they all rhyme with the same letters."

We watched a couple videos from Schoolhouse Rock. (anyone remember?)
